TMCA: Tucson Museum of Contemporary Art

Mobile App

Project Overview

Created the user flow for a museum in Tucson, which allowed enthusiasts to purchase tickets, attend events, and join classes.

My Role

Full UX process, from research to high fidelity prototypes.

Jan-March 2024

Major Insights from Interviews

5 participants

Users want a preview of the museum experience.

100% of participants indicated that they browse museums online to see what is available to view at them.

Users like to reserve tickets through the app.

100% of participants have reserved tickets online because they wanted to secure their reservation and skip the line.

Highlighting upcoming events may increase museum traffic.

Only 20% of participants have ever participated in a museum event.

How might we

Design an app that will allow users to preview the museum experience, book tickets, and showcase upcoming events, so that they will be inspired to attend?

Competitive Analysis

Common Practices of Competitors

  • Organize special events

  • Ticket Reservation

  • Dining

  • Special guest speakers or educational classes

Target Goals moving forward

  • Allow users to reserve tickets for general admission, special events, or classes.

  • Give users access to preview dining menu and hours of operation.

Wireframes

The design of the home screen was developed for two primary purposes: Users would get a clear picture of what the museum offers, while also having the ability to easily navigate to the desired information.

Design Decisions & Usability Study

Key Takeaways from Usability Study

  1. Users need more ways to navigate through the app after leaving the homescreen.

  2. Clarification is needed on whether access to exhibitions is included in general admission.

Three Key Improvements to Mockups

  1. Increased color contrast

After checking my color selection on WebAIM, I discovered that I needed to increase the contrast. I chose to darken the colors. Icons, photos, and buttons are all labeled with text to enable ease with screen reader technology.

2. Added More Navigation

I added an additional navigation button to the “On View” screen in order to give users more option to move forward in the app instead of having to back out of the screen.

3. Added Admission Information

To help users better understand what is included in museum admission, I added more information to the Exhibitions screen.

Next steps in this project:

Conduct another round of usability tests to ensure and optimize functionality and user satisfaction.

If I were to do this project again, I would

  • Incorporate details about museum donations on the homepage to inform visitors of the crucial role that contributions play in supporting museum operations.

  • Consider implementing a feature that enables users to access their purchased eTickets directly within the app.
